The Other Woman...... {Bridal Photography-Dana Stone}

At weddings, the bride is The Star of the Show. Even if she isn't a bridezilla, it really is all about her, isn't it?
The Dress.
The Shoes.
The Man.
The Perfect Location.
and on and and on and on.....

There are shows dedicated to planning weddings, picking the dress and yes, mocking the bridezillas. This is not one of those situations though.

In this case, the Bride was definetely not freaking out about her dress....or her shoes....or the cake....and she knew that her dreamboat would be standing with her and saying yes, kissing her and sweeping her off into the sunset....

But she was freaking out a little bit.

She HATES having her picture taken. As a bridal photographer, that is NEVER a good sign. I knew I would have at most 10 minutes with her at any given moment before she freaked out and walked away. (It was closer to 5 most of the time!) But since she is beautiful, I wasn't too worried about that part.

Unfortunately, the weather for this outdoor wedding was not cooperating. The Mother of the Groom consoled her. The sister of the bride reassured her. The fiancee' promised it would be fine. The Grandmother of the Groom lovingly stressed out away from the bride-to-be and just said it would be fine when she was anywhere near the bride. The photographer (That would be me) tried not to panic about the alternative indoor location and the lighting situation and did I bring enough flash units.....until...suddenly...

The Bride was putting on her dress. The mother of the bride was watching her daughter and granddaughter get ready. The sky grew even darker and then the best man walked in and announced that the tornado sirens had started to go off. The hail started pelting the beautiful flowers lining the isle and the DJ finished packing up all of his equipment.

NOW was time to freak out. The hyperventilating was not making lacing the dress up any easier. I'm imagining the entire wedding in a dimly lit basement, pool table and bar in the background....but there we were, underground, just in case. All of the immediate family and wedding party are filing into the basement and the Bride was panicked because Mr Right couldn't see her yet, but she really didn't want him to die in a tornado outside either! And she wasn't looking forward to finding out if 200 guests could fit in the basement for a wedding. (Although I must admit that it looked like a really fun place to hang out and relax....at a less formal occasion!)

I confess....I was REALLY stressed at this point and started to silently pray. "Please let the rain stop. Don't let everything end up in Oz. Don't let all my camera rental gear that is still upstairs blow away because I can't afford to replace it. Let the guests arrive safely...and don't let anyone have a nervous breakdown!"

Everyone tried to be calm so we didn't spook the Bride any more than she already was. And then the Star of the Moment ....the wonderful, amazing Maid of Honor started cracking jokes. She opened the champagne. She distracted the bride (with the help of the awesome, fantastic Mother of the Groom-but she deserves her own blog post!) till the worst was over.

And wouldn't you know it? The chairs didn't blow away. The groomsmen dried everything off with pool towels and the DJ reset and the sun peeked out and the guests watched two people in love say "I Do." And they lived happily ever after!

Most of the guests had no idea just how much the Maid of Honor did to save the day...and then it rained, but not one person even cared! Dancing in the rain is okay....just not saying your vows!

So this post is for all of the Maids of Honor out there. Those are the girls that run around, making last minute saves, reassuring the bride, rescuing the day, and doing all the things to help the day run smoothly...but THIS ONE couldn't keep a straight face for 10 seconds!

(Don't you love the bride's amused smirk? I was counting on that face, but I didn't realize Erin would collapse in laughter quite that fast!)

I really enjoyed watching Erin laugh in Julia's face when she stressed out about pictures, dance to Sinatra, and just make everyone be happy just because she was there! Thanks for the fun! (and yes, the bride is in here too......isn't she georg?)

And just so you know, THIS Maid of Honor was thanked, loved and appreciated....a lot!

I have wanted to play with some twins for a while now and I finally met these two sweet little girls! My heart melted. How could I possibly decide which one to snuggle with first?

We had a very wiggly set of girls and only got a few pictures, but I got a call later that beautiful Ms. H was STILL asleep 5 hours later. I guess I wore her out! So we will have another playdate soon....after they have played and exhausted themselves!

But my favorite picture from the morning was this one...taken with my iphone....but only because I got to hug both of them at the same time!

This couple was so sweet. She came across the country to see him graduate from XXXXXXX Army School. (Yeah, you didn't really think I was going to share that, did you?)

Anyway, due to the crazy forest fires here, we had to nix some of my favorite spots for couples. But they rocked it anyway!

It was fun to see them relax and enjoy a moment together....with no kids! :)

10 on 10 March

First off, I can count. I'm just ignoring the ten part of the 10 on 10 and posting what I want. After all, usually I forget to even do this project!

We are dealing with Connor's tooth neglect. It's driving me crazy, so Matt has taken to the supervision of boy and his dental hygiene. One more reason that I am grateful for my wonderful, patient husband.

I picked Maddy up from school on Friday and she forgot the homework sheet again on Monday. To my surprise, she was supposed to make a Leprechaun Trap for class. Tuesday, the note was shoved to the bottom of her backpack and I missed it till Wed morning. It was due on Thursday. Sigh. Fortuantely, she is very creative and came up with this great idea. She managed to do almost everything by herself with a liberal amount of duct tape and scotch tape. I helped hold pieces in place while she taped. Pretty cute though!

Apparently Leprechauns like to cause mischief and do not obey signs....and they like glitter.

Maddy added duct tape to keep them from escaping....later she added a thimble of water and a marshmallow for a snack. She can't have a hungry leprechaun!

This is what I planned to do today....

but I ended up sitting here and discussing camera purchases, portrait orders and yoga schedules with all of the people who called all day!

And then I watched a photoshop video training and learned a few new tips....that I probably won't use since I don't have Lightroom and that was today's lesson. Notice my really yummy sandwich on my knees? yum!

The other reason I stayed home all day.....I was waiting for the dishwasher repairman. I was so frustrated because maintenance lost my work-order! Fortunately, the people who run things are fantastic and had the GE guy out to repair it in 24 hours.....sometime between 8 am and 5 pm. He was fast and HORRAY! I have a dishwasher again! I am SOOO Happy. There are just no words.

so I finally pulled out the pattern that I wanted to try....and had to decide....clean up my craft area first or sew? (Sewing won out. I'll clean after it's done)

It was also playdate day at my house. Thursdays are early release, so we like to have friends over. Connor invited Cameden and Richard.....they attacked me with airplanes when I walked in.

The girls were supposed to make these rainbow cookies, but the dough had not set, so this is a "bonus" picture from Friday. They made them at Hannah's house on the Friday playdate. They look great but actually taste like playdough. ugh. All the kids thought they were awesome, but I couldn't' finish one.

And these all count as one, right? Matt talking to Julia on the phone as he explains that I am the bestest wife in the entire world....ever.

A 2011 Kawasaki Vulcan custom....almost all blacked out with some grey accents...

Yeah, he likes it almost as much as his GTO. However, he only has 27 more days to find it a new home. My minivan has been outside for years and I finally got a spot in the garage. I'll be darned if I lose my parking spot inside for another toy. So Matt has to clean out the garage to make room for his toys on HIS half.

I had two fun baby experiences today.... one of my darling Maddy's friends at school is finally a big sister! The weather was nice and mom introduced me to her extremely tiny, sleepy sister! Oh, newborn babies are heaven! I love holding them and smelling their tiny little heads.

I love Valentine's Mini Sessions! I had a great time at the park with Ms. L and her brother. I'll gush about this sweetheart for just a minute....

Do you see this smile? What a fantastic grin! She is genuinely sweet and happy, not to mention brilliant. Yup. A completely fun package. Not to mention that she is a tomboy. I have a special place in my heart for tomboys....because I am a tomboy! This tomboy was willing to dress "cute" for her mom, but she is a rough and tumble, jumping on a trampoline and having fun kind of girl. I love that! She had no fear when I suggested that she climb to the top of the playset to sit with her brother....fantastic!

A few other shots, vintage and casual.....still a lot of fun. When I look at these, I can see the teen that is on her way.....only a few more years! Hopefully, she will still be a little bit of a tomboy as a teen!

There are several people who I think really "had a clue" and understood what makes a woman special. It's not the bling or the hair, it's not the clothes or the car.....it's who she is at heart that makes her beautiful.

I posted this picture already, but since Ms. Leah is so cute, I thought I would share it again.

And I suppose I could share a few more pictures too. She is so tiny and sweet! I love it. I've wanted to find a sleepy baby to test out this doll bed and she was a perfect fit! Seriously, can you get cuter than this?

Since it is almost Valentine's Day, I wanted to play with a fun background....won't this be a sweet valentine?

I do love the details of her tiny face.....puckered baby lips, tiny lashes and cuddly little self....oh, now I need to go visit so I can squish her some more!

I love Christmas but the moment the tree is down, I have the urge to start spring cleaning. Spring is the time of year when I feel like celebrating new growth and my favorite, new babies!

Leah Nicole is the perfect baby! She was snuggly and soft and warm and sleepy! She was so much fun to play with this week! I'm really glad that she finally arrived. Her mom has been waiting for her and it's nice to see her oohing and ahhing over such a cute little doll.

This little girl is about to be spoiled beyond all belief! Do you see her gorgeous hair? Her tiny lashes? Her kissable cheeks? I don't know if anyone will be able to resist her charms. Rumor has it that Daddy is wrapped around her little finger already. Good luck Dad. You have a cute daughter!

I was looking through some pictures and got into a black and white mood. Normally, I'm a bright and colorful type person. I love shoots with vibrant outfits and fun accessories and happy people laughing and playing. But something about these sweet little girls inspired me to bring out the vintage, moody feel.

Their simple, classic look didn't need anything extra. They are perfect exactly as they are. I don't need to add a pop of color or cute hats. I am happy just watching them be themselves.

I may not always be a black and white kind of girl, but sometimes it's exactly what I need.

Sometimes as I look through pictures for the sneak peek picture, I can't choose! I usually pick the amazing shots of cute faces or families that are loving and kind.

This time, I just closed my eyes and picked one. Okay, not really, but there were a lot to choose from. I actually picked this because I know how much J. (the dad) loved this spot and because I loved how Little Miss Rose was giving me a tiny glare as she protectively helped Tiny Little Hazel to navigate the leaves and sticks.

She was not the most enthusiastic child to start with, but after a while we decided to get along and there are some happy pictures too. But that's not what I want to shoot all of the time.

Don't get me wrong, I love to capture happy, giggling babies and loving families. There is a magic moment where everything comes together and the perfect image comes together. I've learned over the years, that sometimes it's the quiet or grumpy pictures that are the most accurate. Most kids don't look or act like the models on tv commercials. Most kids have a personality that can be better described as stubborn, cranky or impish.

AND THAT'S OKAY.

As a mother, I can honestly say that pretty pictures are great, but 50 years from now, I would love to look back and remember how my child was antisocial sometimes, but fiercely protective and loving with her baby sister.

I would hope that these girls are still as close 10 years from now....and 20 years from now.

So this is my picture of the day. Two sisters. Curious. Grumpy. Loving.

These girls are big fans!

Actually Miss C. and her dad are the big fans! Mom and the other girls just love their dad and sister! But we know who they will be cheering for!

This is an AMAZING family. Do I use that word too much? I can't help it! I really am lucky to work with some great families! These girls are wicked smart and super talented. They are all unique and have their own style and personality, but they all share a sweet personality, cute looks, smarts and tons of talent.

I've worked with mom and some of the girls before and they never cease to amaze me. I shouldn't have been surprised to find that Dad and Miss C. are just as fantastic!

I can't wait to share some more pictures, but I have to get these pictures to mom!

...all of the great kids that I get to meet and work with! These kids make me happy just to be near them. I don't have to cajole them or beg them to sit together. I don't ever see them treat each other with anything less that 100% love. (Mom may disagree, but I've never seen their bad side!)

I would turn around for 2 seconds and they would run off and pose, hugging each other and just smile and grin. Honestly, working with them makes me love my job!

I had the chance to shoot with them before and they were great then. See! They loved each other then too!

And just look at these eyelashes! This boy knows he is cute and just can't help it! I have a feeling he will be a heartbreaker when he gets older!

Although I had a blast, hanging out with this great family made me miss my own kids! And a rare picture of me....We had to show off the awesome hat Miss C. let me try on before I left!

I confess. I love babies.

I love squishy, tiny little bundles of adorable-ness all wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket. I love tiny toes and little noses. I love peach fuzz hair and curls. I love skinny babies that are all arms and legs. I love fat babies that have rolls on their rolls.

I love babies.

If I see a cute baby, then I want to take pictures of her cuteness.

If I take pictures of her cuteness, then I want to hold her some more.

Notice that nowhere in there does it say, I want to put her down so I can post the pictures on my blog?

That's right. I'd much rather be hugging a baby than looking at pictures of her...because that just makes me want to go hug her some more.

But.

She and her family have moved. I'm missing her. (insert sad face here) So I will console myself by finally getting around to posting pictures of her cute self.

Sometimes I meet a family and I know right away that they would be perfect for a _______ kind of shoot. I've had families that loved to play and ended up having a impromptu soccer game at the park or car lovers that played at a junkyard....

Every family is different and my goal is to capture the heart of the family in our time together. I KNEW that I was going to get something crazy with this family.

Top Safety Tips for Protecting Digital Image Files

I have so many friends and clients who are thrilled to have the latest and greatest digital cameras! While I can teach you to use your settings to improve your pictures, there are a few things you should know when you have invested in a camera. It's wonderful to have digital images....we can save as many moments as we have space for! But this comes with a cost....it's very easy to lose those happy memories.

I lost years of family pictures in a fatal hard drive crash and I would hate to see anyone lose theirs!

My biggest advice would be to buy camera cards from a reputable dealer and avoid cheap knockoff from China. If you get a deal that is "too good to be true", then it probably is! Brand name cards are much more reliable and when my memories are on the line, it's worth it to save myself the nightmare of losing a once in a lifetime shot!

I am reposting a few tips from Chris Bross, Data Recovery Engineer for DriveSavers. After all, who better to give us advice on saving our pictures than someone who recovers them for a living?

The following list of tips is how to handle flash memory cards properly and help prevent potential loss of precious photographs.

BACK UP YOUR IMAGES! Protect yourself and your irreplaceable images by backing up onto CD/DVDs, tapes, online storage or an external hard drive. This will help guard against data loss when (not if) your hard drive crashes unexpectedly.

TRANSFER YOUR PHOTOS. Copy the image files from the camera’s flash memory to a computer’s hard drive a soon as you can. We recommend not deleting images or reformatting the memory card while it is still in the camera. Wait until all photos are transferred and verified.

FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. Take care when removing flash memory from the camera or card reader. Avoid deleting or corrupting images by using the eject command on the computer or moving the card icon from the desktop to the trash/recycle bin before physically removing the card.

VERIFY THE TRANSFER. Open the images on the hard drive before reformatting the card.

MAKE MORE THAN ONE COPY. Back up your backup media and keep a duplicate offsite in a secure location. (*My advice is to use an external hard drive AND a site like Mozy or Backblaze*Dana)

PROTECT YOUR FLASH MEMORY CARDS. Use the plastic holder when carrying them around. Simple static buildup can zap the card and make it unreadable. There are other dangers as well, such as breaking a card in our pocket or putting the card, along with your clothing, in the wash.

REPLACE YOUR FLASH MEMORY CARDS. Typically, flash memory cards can be used about 1,000 times before they start to wear out. (*When properly handled and stored! Extremes can shorten the life to just a hundred uses!*)

AVOID EXTREME TEMPERATURES. Heat, cold and humidity can wreak havoc with digital equipment, especially flash memory.

ARE THE DIGITAL FILES INCLUDED?

I’ve been asked this periodically, or variations of this question. Sometimes people tell me they want “just the files” because they assume it’s cheaper that way. I understand the misconception, but hopefully this will clear it up for you. I found that the reasons behind these questions usually involve one or more of these three issues: bargain shopping, the digital vs. film myth, and image ownership.

Bargain shopping.

Most people who ask me for the digital files do so because they assume it’s the cheapest way to get my work. They love the artistry they see in it, they see the difference in quality compared to what others produce, but then they want to acquire it for less than what I charge, because it’s more than what others charge. Or they’ve been told by some budget guru that they can get custom portraiture at bargain basement prices by just buying the digital files.

As a custom photographer, it’s my job and my passion to provide you with the best portraits I possibly can…my art. I have no desire to offer anything less. To offer you the best quality, and to also offer you the best assurance that I’ll still be here next year to do the same, I need to charge sustainable prices.

That’s a hard concept to grasp from a consumer’s point of view, especially if you’re just looking for normal, average portraits. Yes, there is an abundance of places who do that, and for cheap. So price shopping IS possible if that’s what you’re looking for. But if you’re interested in having a photographer create art for you, shopping for photographers by price won’t get you the best. It doesn’t even get you a somewhat decent value. You’ve heard it before…you get what you pay for.

You may, occasionally, find someone who’s good at photography and charges very little. But cheap and free are deceptions. They’re not sustainable for any business that consistently delivers high quality. Paying sustainable prices and giving up this expectation to get everything free or cheap is vital to our economy, and vital to ensuring we have businesses like mine to choose from. It’s best to choose a fine portrait artist based on the artistry, not the prices.

The digital vs. film myth.

Some objections to price come from the belief that digital photography is cheaper than film. For your snapshots, it seems like it’s cheaper. You save on film, and you save on prints too. But only because you no longer get whole rolls of film printed. You only have your favorites printed, if that.

Professionals, however, are expected to produce professional-quality printed portraits, and need professional equipment to do so. Equipment costs overall for professionally shooting digital are many times that of film. The cameras alone, to ensure the quality needed, range from $2300 to tens of thousands. More than one is required for many jobs. And they don’t last as long as film cameras did. They need to be replaced every 1-2 years. The memory cards are bigger and faster and way more expensive than the paper-thin cards consumers use. Established photographers with busy client schedules need to have a large supply of memory cards, and replace them often.

The cost of digital also includes the workflow. Processing images on the computer is more time-consuming than developing film and making darkroom prints combined. Computers are a much bigger equipment expense than darkrooms. Not just in the purchase price, and necessary upgrades and replacements, but in the maintenance and troubleshooting. The software necessary is expensive and needs to be updated every year or two, just to maintain compatibility with camera replacements. New skills need to be learned with every update and replacement, requiring time and money spent on classes, workshops, and practice. Digital photography is simply not less expensive than film photography.

Nor are digital images worth any less than printed images. Most of the work that goes into creating portraits goes into that digital file before it’s ever printed. Even most of the work associated with the actual printing, like color management. That’s all done to the files. Digital files, whether in an unfinished digital negative form, or a finished image file, are the artistic creations of the photographer. They contain the work and artistry that prompted you to choose that photographer. They need to be purchased at a price that values the work, and the additional customer service requirements of selling digital files, which are numerous.

Occasionally people mistakenly believe that the images I create belong to the client, and that I have no right to charge for them. Some of the shoot-n-burn photographers even go as far as saying that photographers like me, who charge for our artwork, are holding the client’s images “hostage.”

Any photographs you create yourself do belong to you. And likewise, photographs created by me belong to me, and if you like them enough to buy them, you may. Otherwise, there’s no reason for me to do the work. Federal copyright law is very clear about this. The images are the property of the photographer, and the photographer has the sole right to make prints and copies of the images, and to sell them. This comes as a surprise to some people, because their wedding photographers “gave” them a CD of all the wedding images. You need to know that doesn’t give clients the copyright, and it doesn’t mean the clients own the images. It only gives them a limited license to make prints for personal use.

There’s also a big difference between weddings and portrait sessions, and the way they’re priced. Wedding photographers make a substantial commitment and take on a huge liability when accepting a wedding job. Therefore, they require full payment ahead of time…a flat fee based on the amount they want to make from the hours you’re booking, the size of the wedding, plus maybe an album. They don’t really want the hassle of added print orders afterward. So they include the CD of images with every wedding package. But make no mistake, it’s not free. It’s built into the wedding package price. Brides and grooms are willing to pay thousands of dollars up front because it’s a special day.

Portrait clients aren’t willing to spend thousands up front. They’ll pay a couple hundred dollars for a session fee, but they don’t want to pay for prints or files until they see the proofs. Session fees cover some basic costs incurred the day of the session. Portrait photographers rely solely on the sale of prints to cover the rest of their costs and make a profit. Giving away the digital files so clients can make their own prints would be financially devastating, and create a situation where there’s no reason to be offering the services in the first place.

There are photographers out there who perpetuate the misconceptions discussed above, by giving their work away, but they can’t survive long doing it at least not while producing quality work. If you want to work with a photographer on a long-term basis, and have her photograph your family as it grows, choose one who knows the value of her work and won’t compromise on quality. And be willing to pay a fair price for it.

My digital files are for sale, as are prints. I offer web sized images for those who would like digital files to view or post online, but do not want to spend the money for higher resolution images.

Note: Many people believe that chain retail studios, such as Sears or Olan Mills "give" the copyright away. Actually, the prints are copyrighted and may not be duplicated. For the average session 8-12 poses, a cd may be purchased for $199-$299 with a print release. I offer very different services than Sears or other chain studios and run my business accordingly. Unlike them, I take the time to travel to events and locations (such as parties, weddings and family events). Also, I capture between 35 final images (mini shoots) to over 1000 (weddings). Most chains limit you to 20 minutes and 4-12 shots to select your order from. In addition to the time I spend on the shoot, I have a proofing session where I sit down with my clients to offer unique gifts, packages and gallery design services. This is after I carefully edit each photo to ensure quality. I would not want subpar work being displayed or offered to clients and strive to provide exceptional service. I an sure you can understand that given how much more time and effort I invest into your photos that I must lprice my services differently as well. My business depends on clients purchasing teh products I sell so I can not simply give my hard work away. If you can not afford all of the files you love, then I offer web sized images at a discounted price and payment plans.

Does it drive you crazy when you try to take pictures of your child and you get this?

Well, these 9 pictures were taken in about 90 seconds! Can you see how fast your child changes in such a short time frame?

Imagine if you stopped shooting after the first shot and started directing your child to "smile, say cheese, don't make that face, sit up taller, look at me, pay attention, sit still, smile"

You would have ONE picture and a very frustrated child!

What about this one?
Can you tell who wants to run over to a mud puddle to play?
Who is bored?
Who is the daydreamer?
Who is listening to her mom tell her to "Look at me" ?
Which one can't sit still?
Which one is shy?
Which on is silly?
Which one hates to have his picture taken?

A picture can be more than just a record of what your kids look like. A picture can show WHO they are, WHAT their attitude is and where they are right now.

Next time you want to snap a picture, take a moment to remember that today, your child is at a stage that they will never be in again. Your 16 year old will not be the sweet, bubbly, energetic 5 year old anymore. Catch the picture of who they really are right now! Not every picture needs to be looking at the camera. Not every picture needs to be standing tall and smiling. Silly grins, goofy faces and laughter are fleeting. They won't last forever, so when you take pictures of your own family, remember not to be too worried about it. You are preserving a moment!

When you book a photoshoot with me, I will capture your child at their best (and maybe even their worst!) I will preserve the moments that are only here right now and find their unique personality. So enjoy yourself! Let your kids enjoy themselves! We will get that perfect family shot AND all those wonderful things that you love about your kids!

Why should I pay for portraits? After all....

...my uncle Bob has a fancy camera. His camera can take good pictures? Right?

A question I am asked frequently is why photographers charge what they do. There is such a discrepancy in prices – and those shopping purely on price alone are nearly always going to go the least expensive route. But is that the wisest decision?

One phrase I hear a lot is, “it only costs 10c to make a print – so why do you charge so much?” And if the value of the image was only the print paper cost itself, that would be a valid question. But then again, a lawyer makes several thousands and all they produce is paper worth less then a penny. So why do we pay lawyers upwards of $100 an hour?

The easy answer is that an experienced photographer – one who has spent years studying the craft, honing skills, and perfecting style, is going to give you a much better image than the beginner who is simply clicking a shutter button on auto. If clicking the shutter is the only parameter of a professional photographer, I’d like to offer the services of my 5 year old – she takes great pictures (everyone says so!) and I’m happy to hire her out for $200 for a disk of images. She’ll be happy too – she’d love a new doll. But why pay $200 for my 7 year old (or a beginner photographer) when you can just have the grandparents click the button instead – and for free?

I could make this post longer by summing out costs of being a photographer: VAT/taxes, insurance, business development costs, time, software, equipment, the desire to not work for free for other people ……. but really, I would think that most would recognize there are obvious costs behind owning any business. Would you really feel you were saving money if you hired a lawyer who had no formal training or education but who felt they would be good at winning lawsuits because they saw someone do it on TV?

The parallel is true since many photographers are encouraged by friends and family (would you tell your best friend that the image she shot and is so proud of has a kid in dappled light and a telephone pole sticking out of his head with a white balance so off that he is practically blue?). Similarly, many photographers are not licensed business owners – so if you get charged for poor portraits, you have no recourse. I would love to charge less – and certainly my photography business isn’t going to buy me a Lexus. But at the same time, it is frustrating to be legal, pay taxes, and yet lose customers to those operating illegally.

Truly: professional images comprise a lot of factors – otherwise, why would you hire someone to photograph your children if you could just do it yourself? Composition, metering, focus, white balance, skin tones, light in the eyes, pose, post processing….. these are skills that take time to develop. And the difference in quality should be fairly obvious if you compare portfolios.
Which always leads to the next question: “It’s just the camera, right?”

And that one hit kind of home for me. One day last year, my sister told me she wanted to take images of her family and have them be as good as mine – so she asked which DSLR she should buy. I answered her honestly: unless you are going to shoot in manual modes (not auto) and learn ISO, F-stop, Shutter speed, spot metering, etc, she could spend thousands and thousands and not have as good images. Good images are about using the equipment and reading the light correctly – neither of which can be obtained in AUTO by clicking a button. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and spend thousands. But also be prepared to admit that it’s not the camera, it is the artist BEHIND the lens, that is making the creative and beautiful portraits. And as for my sister? She bought a prosumer and not a DSLR and has been very happy since. And saved quite a bit of money in the process.

It really isn’t about the camera. When the light is read correctly, the right F-Stop is chosen, and sound post processing is applied, a boring location can turn into something amazing.

One thing I really find interesting is that people will buy Coach purses, fancy flatscreen TVs, expensive toys and sets for their children, and all manner of luxury goods that have maybe a 1-2 year lifespan. But when it comes to professional portraits, which will last a lifetime, they base the decision purely on price. I’m not sure at what point children and family become less important than a fancy purse. But I can tell you that those who purchased high quality portraits have a beautiful reminder of a time that has past – and those portraits are still hanging or displayed while the purse has long since been thrown away.

Sure, parents can choose to purchase inexpensive photography based solely on price. Not everyone can afford the price of a good photographer and the compromise often is quality. But I truly hope and encourage buyers to really consider what they are buying and why – and not to choose solely on price. Your memories do not have a price tag and once this moment is gone, you forever lose the chance to have hired a true professional to beautifully capture your family.
Choosing the best you can afford will always be the best advice given to anyone looking for quality professional portraits. As with anything hand-made and requiring an artistic eye, those who produce quality work often charge more – it compensates for the amount of time they have spent learning and perfecting their art. Choose not based on price – but on how the photographer expresses themselves – and how that will translate into your family’s portrait work. Choosing based solely on price is saying that all photographers are the same – and that really isn’t true.

Sure, price may not always reflect skill. That’s where a buyer’s judgment and comparison of portfolios come in. But it is a good bet that a lot of the cheap photographers that only charges $35 for a disk of imagees will disappear in a year as they realize they are actually losing money and working for nearly free. And that is also a concern because they may not have an interest in protecting or archiving your photos.

Hero Hearts EquiCenter in Sierra Vista Arizona, just offered a Military Kid Horse Camp and my kids were able to attend.

I had no idea how much my kids were going to love riding horses. It was a fantastic opportunity and this sneak peak will show you that my daughter was thrilled!

They provide therapeutic horseback riding lessons, equine-facilitated psychotherapy, and equine facilitated learning to wounded soldiers, veterans, retirees, and emergency services personnel through the NARHA Horses for Heroes program, as well as programs for adults with disabilities.

The NARHA Horses for Heroes program is specifically designed for wounded military service personnel. Through the unique power of the horse, we are able to help our soldiers and veterans physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually through activities such as therapeutic riding and equine facilitated psychotherapy and learning. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to those who have given so much for our country.

THERAPEUTIC RIDING:

Therapeutic riding sessions are designed and implemented for each individual client based on their specific needs. Riding sessions include various activities to help improve physical abilities of each rider, and each rider is paired with the appropriate horse based on their riding skills, and the horse’s physical attributes. Therapeutic riding can help increase range of motion in joints; improve balance and posture; provide a sense of accomplishment, increase self-confidence and promote social interaction.

Last year, I was asked to shoot a last minute, very important wedding! This amazing couple was faced with a military separation messing up their plans! They had prepared for a wonderful wedding followed by a honeymoon and then moving overseas for the Army.

But alas, the Army did not agree! So they needed to get the legal paperwork done so they could be together! What was a quick ceremony for them turned into one of my all time favorite events of all time!

Can you see how much they love each other? How adorable and sweet they are together?

Yes, Christie, we know you are hot.

How silly and fun and full of life? I loved loved loved shooting them because they were beautiful and amazing and crazy in love!

The love of a military wife..... {Photos of the Heart-Army Photography, Fort Huachuca AZ}

....has to be one of the strongest bonds in the world.

It's hard to say goodbye to the soldiers in our lives. I know because I have had to say goodbye more times than I want to think about. I hated the countdown that led up to the final goodbye because it was just so hard to focus on anything but the soldiers leaving.

That's why I am so glad that I was able to take some pictures for this family. He is getting ready to deploy and leave behind his wife and young son. It's important to have pictures of happy times so that when goodbyes are finally said, there is something tangible to hold onto.

And this couple is so happy and so in love. It was interesting to spend time with a young couple who is right where I was years ago. They have a positive attitude and are obviously in love. I see how they are about to be separated, but I also see how their future lies ahead. Even though there will be miles between them, they can still support and love one another.

I see them and think of the reunion (I hope I get to be there!) that will take place in what seems like such a long way away. Even though goodbyes are sad, I see a glimpse of the joy that will be at their reunion. I'm sure that will be a wonderful, amazing, joyful day.

Hot Momma! -{Photos of the Heart-Fort Huachuca Photographer}

I received a call from Hannah to take portraits of her family before her husband deployed. She really emphasized that she wanted the pictures to focus on her husband and her spunky little boy.

Not a problem, right? I love taking pictures of kids and their dads. But she didn't want to be the focus of the pictures...and that was such a shame! Look at how absolutely gorgeous this mom is!

This was literally the last shot of the day and and the ONLY one of her by herself. As you can see, it turned out perfect! The was supposed to be a sneak peek of the family shoot, but since she is usually focused on her family, I wanted her to have a turn to shine. So, Hannah, bask in the fact that you really are very photogenic and not just beautiful in person!

I'll be posting a few more pictures of her with her husband soon and I'm sure you can see why he is so in love with her!

(PS, She is cheerful and sweet in person too! I loved visiting with her and her family! I can't wait to show off some of their bubble shots!)

Missoula Children's Theater comes to Fort Huachuca! -{Photos of the Heart-Children's Photographer}

Missoula Children's Theater introduced nearly 60 military children to acting last week as they performed "King Arthur's Quest" at Col. Johnston Elementary school on post. The children practiced the production the entire week and performed the show for the public at 7 p.m., Friday.

The kids were amazing! Some kids had previous acting experience, but most were new to the stage. They had a chance to learn songs, dances and basic stage direction. They worked very hard all week and were thrilled when they finally got to show off for their friends and family.

I met an adorable Indian Princess recently and was invited to her lavish birthday celebration! Meet Princess Nizhoni!

Okay, maybe she wasn't an actual princess, but she certainly was adorable enough! She had a traditional outfit thanks to her Grandmother and Aunt and she looked the part. She was a sweetheart the entire day, but I did manage to capture a little bit of her attitude! She had just the right amount of spunk!

I could go on about how sweet Nizhoni was, but while she was the star of the show, she had plenty of friends who were just as full of fun!

I just realized that today I am posting my 100th post. I think I was a lot more excited about this milestone when I was posting at Joeuser, but hey, it's a milestone nevertheless.

My friend Nadine is doing a 30 day blog post where she blogs about something different every day for a month...I'll see if I keep it up.

Day one: Favorite Song.

Hands down, without-a-doubt, favorite song ever and probably for the rest of my life is.....Elton Johns's "I Guess that's why they call it the Blues"

Many years ago, I was once in the Army and stationed at the Presidio for Language training. I happened to be dating a fantastically amazing guy. One of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of guys, you know? (happy thoughts!) Back to the story-One night about midnight, we started talking about how as kids, Saturday mornings were reserved for sugary cereal and cartoons. (Yes, oh young ones, way back in the day, we had 5 channels, rabbit ears and cartoons ONLY on Saturday mornings!)

We were having so much fun that we decided to walk to Safeway and pick up some supplies so we could recreate our childhood! (Back then, we walked everywhere! We had no car!)

We were in the middle of picking our favorite sugar shock (mine was Golden Grahams and he loved Lucky Charms), when he started to drag me through the isles and start looking around like a madman. It says something about how much I liked him because I didn't run away from him! He finally stopped and took the basket and put it aside.

He took me in his arms, right there in the middle of Safeway and started to dance with me. That's when I realized he was looking for a speaker to stand under! He sang in a quiet voice as he held me close. The world just melted away. I couldn't have told you if we had an audience or not, but it was a magical moment.

And still today, anytime we hear the opening notes, Matt will sweep me into his arms and croon as we dance around the floor.

Connor hates romance, but Maddie loves to see us together....This was the song we danced to at our wedding, but more priceless than that moment was the first dance...the one in the middle of the night at a grocery store in California.

Bisbee, Arizona is a fantastic place to visit! Just make sure you bring your walking shoes because there are lots of stairs and hills! I took a trip out to Bisbee to scout out some fun places to shoot upcoming sessions.

My good friend Patty joined me on this particular outing.

She insisted that I get a few pictures as well...so I can show off my dorky side.

Aside from our silliness, we did have a lot of fun exploring Bisbee's shops and alleyways. There seemed to be a hidden treasure around every corner!

You are what you wear.

A little cliché? Perhaps. But when it comes to portrait photography, clothing plays a huge role in the finished product.

First of all, let’s be clear what you’re clothing does NOT need to be:

Brand New
I’m down with your favorite ripped jeans, retro band T’s, and worn converse – as long as you know how to rock them in your own fabulous style.

Unless it’s your thing (If it’s really your thing, then by all means, bring on the bling). If you’re not normally a dress-up kind of person, don’t feel like you have to be one for your session.

Matching
No need to focus on matching everything from the color of your fuchsia headbands to the stripes in your socks. In fact, I beg of you, please, please don’t. If you’re heart is set on everyone in white button downs and khaki pants, I’m probably not your girl.

Stressful
No need to worry about each and every item, or fret about the suitability of each accessory. This is supposed to be fun. If you’re unsure – call me, and together, we’ll make sure you look fabulous. I promise.

I want you to be happy, thrilled, over the moon about your images, and I know that this is much more likely if we take the time and work together to help you choose clothing that fits these few simple rules:

Feels Good.
During your shoot you could be sitting in a pile on the grass having a tickle battle, rolling down a hill with your fiancé, throwing your kiddos in the air or climbing a tree. Wear clothing that lets you do all that (and more) comfortably.

As for the kids? Well…uncomfortable kids have a tendency to look…uncomfortable, and are often cranky to boot. Happy kids make for happy pictures.

Bottom Line: Don’t choose outfits that make any of you feel constrained, stiff, itchy, scratchy, like you’re dressed up for Halloween, or that leave you with a nagging worry that a button might pop if you bend the wrong way. Trust me.

Looks Good.
This can be tricky, looking good is totally subjective – right? If you’re not a fashionista in real life, you might want to pull in some extra help from a straight-talking friend or your trusty photographer (that would be me) who knows about such things and has plans in place to help.

Sometimes last year’s of-the-moment dress has already become hopelessly untrendy. Sometimes the current fashions just don’t look or feel like you. Sometimes outfits that look good in the mirror might not be ideally suited for photography.

Bottom Line: If you don’t feel fabulous-fierce-take-on-the-world gorgeous in your outfit, you’re not going to love, love, love the end result – and I’m all about you love, love, loving the end result.

Makes Sense.
Here’s where we pull it all together. It’s not just enough that everyone look good and feel good – you’ve gotta look and feel good together AND the outfits should fit with your location and the desired mood for your portraits.

Glup. That seems like a lot, doesn’t it? (quick – revisit #4 in the top list, and remember, don’t stress).

Before you even begin figuring out your wardrobe, we’ll have an in depth consultation to narrow down what you really want for your pictures, choose the perfect location and make sure you have an understanding about how that all comes together in the finished photograph. I’m with you every step of the way.

Bottom Line: It’s easier than it seems. Think twice about having Emma in a lace prom dress if you can’t get Tommy out of his spider man cape and favorite Star Wars pajama top. If we’re going to be running around in a park, you’ll likely not decide to wear your starched Sunday best. Hate the way stripes and plaids look together but Dad has his favorite stripped polo ready to go? Best steer mom away from her beloved family tartan. Easy-Peasy. [unless Mom is really attached to that tartan, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it).

If you’re still not certain, and you can’t decide between the yellow wrap dress with your red heels or your dark skinny jeans and purple belted shirt – I’ve got good news. You don’t have to decide. Bring lots of options. Heck – throw your whole wardrobe into the back of the car. When we get to the session we’ll wing it all with fabulous results. Trust me.

Now take a deep breath. Close your eyes. Imagine how blow-everyone-away-fabulous-ready-for-America’s-Next-Top-Model you’re all going to look in those pictures….

Can you see it yet? I totally can. WOW! You look INCREDIBLE!

Sometimes the smallest details are the ones that mean the most. There is something heartwarming about such a small gesture. The hand of a child tucked safely in their father's hand.

You don't need to see their faces to know that there is an expression of contentment on the child's face. Suddenly his world feels a lot safer and he can relax after a year's separation.

So no matter how often I see a soldier holding his child's hand, I will always be struck by the moments in my memory....the ones where I see the contentment of a reunion!

I know that my time at Fort Hood has come to an end...and while I won't miss the deployments, I will miss the reunions. Fort Huachuca Arizona isn't known for separations. I'm glad for that! Yet, I will always love the joy and excitement of a reunion that makes me feel that the world is a wonderful place to be.

I love shooting this family....I think Bode is adorable. Mom is going to be in trouble when he gets a bit older! The girls are going to love his cute little smile and bad boy attitude!

But as cute as he is...he faces some tough competition from his sister! She is super sweet and mom has a great fashion sense, so she was decked out with flowers and jewels!

They obviously love each other and Bode can't wait for his baby sister to get big enough to play with even more!

I just love it when I meet a family like this. It is so much fun to see them grow up! I took a picture of Sarah and her adorable baby boy almost 2 years ago. They were full of so much joy that I had to put them on my website splash page because just seeing them made me happy.

As it turns out, Bode is still extremely energetic and fun. He is also the big brother now!

A wet, rainy Cav reunion!

Normally, I am very protective of my camera. It's a Nikon D300 and I love it. But there are some times when I can't reschedule an event.

Reunions are just such a time. So when I find out that a family will be welcoming a soldier home at 5:15 am on a freezing, rainy morning, I do what has to be done. I bundle up and get a very large plastic bag to cover my camera! It was very difficult and frustrating to work that way and I hope the weather gets better soon! I know that I could have done a much better job if I wasn't frozen to the bone!

I have to say, the weather was crazy. It was so cold and the wind was so strong that the rain felt like it was coming down sideways. The 1st Cav Division always welcomes soldiers home on the field in front of Division Headquarters. They figure that the soldiers and families have put up with so much already that a little bad weather won't stop them! The music still blares and the families still cheer, but there is a lot more huddling together and the ceremony is very short!

But the families were just as enthusiastic about the reunion...the kisses as passionate and the love as strong.

This reunion was important to me. I wasn't paid for this but I really wanted to make sure I could be there to support Robyn. For non-military people, the idea of soldiers deploying for a year is a difficult thing to imagine. It's stressful and intimidating for military families as well. They are far from home and support systems and it can be pretty tough. That is where the FRG or Family Readiness Group comes in.

The FRG is an all volunteer organization, set up at the individual unit level to provide a support system and contact for families and the unit. When it works, it is a blessing to everyone! Since it is an all volunteer organization, the level of commitment and success varies from unit to unit, so there are plenty of complainers out there! But in this case, Robyn was the FRG leader of our unit.

We were transfered to a new unit only weeks before the soldiers left for Iraq. Her husband was leaving as well, but she made it a priority to make sure I was welcomed and included in the FRG. Due to my schedule, I was unable to attend many of the meetings, but she still emailed and called with lots of information and updates so that I was not forgotten. I am a key caller and responsible for helping her contact and communicate with the many people in our unit. Most of them are home now, but we still have another flight due in. I'm sure she will be standing there, welcoming those families and soldiers as well. She attends as many reunions as possible and even made a point of taking pictures at my reunion as well!

I am thankful for the things that she has done to support the soldiers and the families, so it was important that I be there for her reunion! Thank you Robyn, for the work you have done. I hope you understand that even though you may not hear from many of the families that you support, your efforts are appreciated and make a difference.

This sweetheart was so much fun! He had just learned to walk, so of course, he spent a lot of time showing off his new talent! He had a very spunky personality and was a ball of energy! I love this age...Everything is exciting and fun for one year olds!

I saw this picture (2nd one taken at the shoot) and I thought that she she cute, so I quickly uploaded it, thinking that her dad would like to see his girls looking so sweet.

I then flipped back to the rest of her session and realized that I made a HUGE mistake.

This picture isn't cute. It didn't even make the final cut of the top 40 pictures. This is NOTHING.

A few weeks ago, I took the kids to the mermaid pond in Salado to take some pictures. We ended up taking pictures of the mermaid-not-pond...there was no water to be found....just a hint of nearly dry scum. Yuck.

Heidi took this picture on Friday...the heavy rains have caused a flash flood. I hope that the mermaid makes it through unscathed....I do want to do pictures there again some day!

It was at a vineyard in Florence and the heat was offset by the cool breezes that flowed through the open windows in their honeymoon villa. Junie B Jones and a little Monkey Business

I love the theater. I'm not saying I have loved every performance that I have ever seen, but there is something about going to a live performance that is unique and fun and special. There is something about it that can't be replaced by a movie. Sure, the movie won't have tech problems or people forgetting lines, but I love being part of something special right there. I was in a community theater group as a teen, but haven't had the time since.

I have to say I love the kids, cast and crew at Viva Les Arts. They are so energetic and wonderful. They really love what they are doing and it shows! I have seen a handful of the kids in a number of performances and they never fail to do an amazing job. They really are talented!

I am a bit partial though. I have my favorites, kids who have come a long way and others that I know from other places (but I won't mention names 'cause I think they are all great kids!) I am so proud when I see kids I know trying something new and throwing off inhibitions as they act on stage.

VLA just put on Junie B Jones and a Little Monkey Business. If you haven't snagged tickets, there are still some avalible for this weekend's shows. They actually managed to have to complete casts, one elementary school kids and a group of older kids AND deal with flooding the week of the shows! They were amazing and fun...

My daughter is 4 and she was estatically clapping and cheering. She thought it was fascinating how the sets moved and the lights changed. She REALLY loved the magical pink princess number! My son had fun too. He is a bit older and still enjoyed the experience. He's not ready to dive into acting, but I can hold out hope!

Oh Happy Day!

One of the greatest things about being a photographer is being part of special moments. I love sharing in the joy of a couple in love, the quiet moment with a precious baby, and the laughter of a happy family.

It's hard to decide what my favorite shoot is. I love each session for a different reason, but today was one of my favorites.

I've had the chance to be part of two reunions this week as families welcomed husbands home from Iraq. Both families have been apart for over 10 months and are only having a short visit before their beloved soldiers have to return to Iraq. This is a very special moment for them, full of emotion and joy.

The first family has struggled through difficult deployments, supporting friends and family alike. N. is a wonderful mother and military wife. I've seen her help numerous people through challenging times, myself included! So it was a joy to spend some time with her and her amazing boys at the airport. As I waited through the delays, I could see how excited they were to finally have their family together again. It made my day to see how happy they were. (I'm getting teary eyed again just thinking about it!)

I'll cut to the chase and show you two of my faves.

As wonderful as that reunion was, each and every reunion has a special moment. Today's was especially touching because I was in the same situation a few years ago. B's youngest daughter really doesn't remember her dad other than conversations on the phone and pictures. She is very shy with strangers. So it wasn't unexpected to see her cling tightly to her mom when she was introduced to her dad.

The other kids were excited and jumping everywhere. She may have been a bit overwhelmed. Mom and Dad were patient and gave her a minute to adjust. The other kids started begging Dad to check out the "woods" in the backyard. When he went with the two oldest, A. suddenly started to chase after him.... in her tiny little voice, she clearly started calling him "Daddy! Daddy!" She remembered him and wanted him to come back. (Okay, now I'm really getting weepy.)

I can't help it. There is something wonderful about seeing a family that is so happy and so excited just to be together again. Family portraits are fun and I love them, but I don't think many things can top the joy of a reunion. I have a few more in the works and I'm counting down to mine! Every one makes me so happy!

Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

Digital technology is brilliant. The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and amazing amounts of control for the photographer, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur. With flexibility comes a price though. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into all of this.

Even though you pay $1.99 for a print at your local drugstore and paying for film is pretty much a thing of the past (although you still pay for memory) you may be wondering why you may pay upwards of $40, 50, 70, 90 for a custom photography print. Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

"How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?"

The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with the time, aforementioned equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer, expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

TIME of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Approaching it from a time standpoint, for instance let’s imagine if you will that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and that is travelling an hour to your on location session. TIme break down:

* session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
* one hour travel time TO session
* 15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
* 90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
* one hour travel time FROM session
* 30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
* 30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
* 2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
* 1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
* 2-3 hours time with client for ordering images
* 1 hour sorting through and checking order
* 30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
* 30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
* any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

As you can see, average client time for a session ranges from just under 13 hours to 19 hours dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

COSTS of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run up $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES:

Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $25 for an 8×10 or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. According to several articles at the time, did you know that in February 2007 a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ "professional" prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait studios in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your "PORTRAITS" are considered the true "loss leader".

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, "SAY CHEESE" experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this (lengthy) article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment.

I think this sums up my philosophy on life, kids and my camera.....

Speaking of that....here are some shots of my kids from today.

Maddie was a princess all day long...modeling her new Cinderella dress. (I got this at the same time as the shoes...GREAT deal on that too!)

But boy was much less cooperative. I guess I shouldn't feel so bad about the lack of pictures of him. It's his own darn fault.

*Note* I showed my son the pictures of him and explained that I just wanted ONE nice picture and could he please cooperate. He eyeballed me and deadpanned..."Mom, bad pictures will just build your character."

Okay, there are happy babies and then there are HAPPY babies! This little guy is definetely one of the latter! He was just a curious and enthusiastic kid! (He isn't such a baby anymore...it's time to wish him a happy 1st birthday.)

I love how he went from a mostly bald smiley boy, to this golden curled angel. I'm sure he isn't perfect, but wow....he has a lucky mom. Good looks and happiness all in one cute package!

I'm finishing up the last of my orders before the holidays and I had to post this proof of an accordian book. The Ericson family was wonderful to meet. They love their newest addition, Malia! Her adoption from China was recently finalized and they chose to send out some accordian brag books to some family and friends.

Maura and Steve are so much fun! When she suggested we meet at a tire shop/junkyard, I was THRILLED! I have been dying to try some fun shots and this was the perfect couple to have some fun with.

They are obviously madly in love and they were completely at ease....to the point of being fun and goofy...I am going to have SO much fun processing the pictures. My only problem....how to pick my favorites! I think that these two are some of them. Now I just have to narrow down the 100 or so other shots!

I had the joy of shooting Doug and Susie's wedding almost a year ago....They were married in a unique and fun ceremony at the Dell Diamond.

And now they are the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl! I am thrilled that they asked me to take Miss A's pictures. She is so sweet and just a little bit stubborn. She did NOT like to be on her tummy at all, but she loved being in the spotlight. I am sure she smiled on purpose ~ no baby has that many smiles unless they are happy! I had a tough time narrowing down the pictures because she is so precious!

My daughter wanted to wear her flowergirl dress yesterday (for a wedding-but not as THE flowergirl) and we took a few minutes to get a picture of her with her Little Red Riding Hood cape for halloween. SHe actually let me take pictures for a whole 2 minutes!

Seeing a family come together in love is one of the most wonderful things in the world. Shawndel and Jeff's marriage was one of those moments. Will, Georgia, and Elliot joined them in making this marriage more than just joining 2 people, but in creating a family. They were married under a 2 hundred year old oak tree, celebrating with family and friends from around the world.

Christen and John had a fantastic wedding. There were dancing grandfathers and grandsons, friends and family all gathered to help them celebrate their new life together. (Can you tell that I love weddings?)

As always, my favorite pictures are those of the newly married couple. We took a few minutes to escape from the party and catch the perfect sunset. Nothing compares to the look in the eyes of a couple that is truly in love.

This little guy captured my heart and nearly stole the show! He is the ringbearer for a wedding tomorrow and I snapped this at the dress rehearsal. It's a good thing that Christen and John are so wonderfully happy and in love....otherwise this little guy might be hard to resist!

Wow. Wow is all I can say. Alyssa was so much fun and she was willing to try almost anything.....including running out onto a really long and really narrow bridge for this shot.

I am so glad she did. I have had this picture floating around my mind for a while now and I really wanted to see if I could get it out where others could see it.

I also wanted the overly done, kinda cheesy jumping picture, but the line of cars was getting kind of long, so I'm happy with this!

Christin and John are so obviously in love. It was wonderful to watch them together. They are a perfect couple....except for the height difference! Poor Christen is only up to his armpit unless he slouches a lot! I guess that she will be wearing lots of tall shoes if she wants to sneak up and give him a kiss on the cheek!I can't wait for their wedding in October!

I just couldn't wait to share this with you! Alyssa is an amazing woman and a beautiful bride-to-be. We had a blast on a trip to Salado to take her bridal portraits.

She was so happy and energetic...dancing enthusiastically! She was so brave when I asked her to climb onto a sandbar....and stand in the center of a narrow bridge with cars flying by.

How fun is this family-to-be?
Poor Shawndel was trying so hard not to laugh while they were kissing....they are such a loving, happy family! I will be shooting their wedding in October and we took a few shots for their twist on a guest book. They are having all the guests sign a 16x20 mat with (a different) family photo. But I just loved this one!

Siblings are wonderful things....and this picture is wonderful too! Sydni and Eden are great kids but the faces they (and their siblings!) made at today's session were so funny! As I look through the shots, I find more and more fun shots like this.

But unfortuanately not all the kids were this happy.....

New Shoes

NEW SHOES

As excited as Ryan was to be playing at the park, nothing was nearly as interesting as his new shoes. He showed me no less than 4 different times how he could unvelcro and readjust his shoes! He was so much fun!

I am glad we moved the shoot up~Texas is blazing hot and I was starting to sweat from chasing him around! He was a blast!

I do offer customized storybooks...they come framed, matted and ready to hang! 10x20 storybooks with 3 5x7s are only $18! Want more pictures? I have a larger size that holds 5 5x7s for $35!

Oh my gosh, this family was amazing!

I have to link to an article I wrote on my personal blog about Suessical the Musical. Rebekah was the director for this fantastic performance. (If you see her name listed anywhere on the billing at VLA....GO SEE IT!) Gushing aside, this really is a great family.

We had a blast playing in their backyard on the lush green grass (yeah, I'm jealous...I'm only good at growing weeds!) and the kids had so much energy. It was so much fun to watch them in action.

When all is said and done, no matter how cute the other pictures are, this one is my favorite. I keep coming back to it because it just shows how much love there is in this family. I'll probably post some more soon!

Adorable Addition

I love how I had the opportunity to see the B. family grow. Our daughters are close in age and I remember seeing their youngest as she grew from a tiny baby to a bald toddler to the adorable little girl she is today.

It was wonderful to finally meet the newest addition, Eli. He is simply adorable. It was an interesting shoot...he was not particularly interested in cooperating....but he was so cute. I did get a few good shots in and I'm sure I'll kidnap him later on to take more pictures!

Happy Sister....Angry Baby

The best part of this shoot (for me, anyway!) was seeing the joy and happiness in "Peaches" face when she held her little brother. They obviously love each other and it was plain to see she was thrilled to be a big sister.

Unfortunately, he was a little less happy during the shoot. In my defense, we did get some happy baby shots, but I actually loved this one. His cranky, angry face was adorable. His mom thought so too! She picked this one to send to the family!
I'm looking forward to seeing Peaches again. She is a natural in front of the camera and she will be coming to see me for her own photo shoot when she has her birthday. You should have heard how excited she was! I've never seen a kid that happy about getting her picture taken!

I just had the opportunity to photograph an adorable little girl. The same day that Sam kept sticking her cute tounge out was the last day of a "Cutest Baby Contest" So I grabbed a shot and entered it before the deadline. I think she is pretty cute....wish us luck!

I also had the blessing of taking her pictures when she was brand new....check out how much she has grown in the last 6 months!

I am so proud of Ms. S. She is performing in Suessical the Musical. At the age of 7, she has already proven to be a very good actress, performing in a number of plays at Viva Les Arts.

What a joy to shoot such a happy family. The kids were full of so much energy and they are obviously a very loving family. There is a wide variety of personalities but the one thing that they all have in common was a noticable love for each other....
